Berkshire Springs Bottled Water Quality Report
Berkshire Mountain Spring Water, located in Massachusetts, is the bottler for Mountain Fresh Spring Water. Your bottled water meets all federal and state health standards. The FDA regulates bottled water as a food product whereas EPA regulates tap water as provided by water utilities. Standards of quality enacted by the FDA for bottled water are equal to or more stringent than the EPA’s standards (known as Maximum Contaminant Levels) for tap water. You can trust the quality, good taste, and safety of Berkshire Springs.

Our Spring Water
Berkshire Springs uses protected spring sources which are bottled directly on-site. Berkshire Springs has, for almost a century, collected spring water from a protected underground aquifer emerging to the surface. The water in this aquifer begins as rain and snow high up in the hills and it remains underground, protected, until it is captured and bottled without human contact. Layers of solid rock and clay provide an impervious (not-passable) protective cover for the aquifer water. This source water is completely natural and collects a standard blend of minerals which leads to its special, light flavor appreciated by so many. Berkshire Springs tests there source regularly to verify its consistency and high-quality.
How Berkshire Spring Water is Protected
Berkshire Springs water is protected by a multi-barrier approach including steps such as:
Source protection and monitoring
- Treatment such as micron filtration
- Ultraviolet light sanitizing
- Ozonation
- Finished product testing
As a member of the International Bottled Water Association (IBWA), Berkshire Springs is subject to a comprehensive annual inspection which further ensures the high quality of their beverage. This organization is a leader in improving the safety and quality of this critical resource.
Since the spring water comes from such a well-protected and monitored source, Berkshire can keep their processing of the product to a minimum. The pure natural spring water passes through a multiple stage filtration system extracting sediment and suspended particles down to 0.5 microns in size. Ozonation and ultraviolet light are used to guarantee sanitization of the water while leaving no residual effect in the water you drink.
All of the bottled water products are ozonated. Ozone is used instead of chlorine because it leaves no residual and it does not affect human health, taste or odor. Ozone is oxygen (O₃ to be exact) which is bubbled through the water just before it goes into a clean, sanitized bottle. Within a few hours after the bottle has been filled and capped, the ozone naturally reverts to the same form of oxygen that we breathe (O₂).

Water Analysis
Berkshire Springs regularly tests for 62 organic chemicals and 27 inorganic chemicals that are regulated by the FDA. As an extra safeguard they also test for 62 unregulated contaminants. There have been no violations of any Standard of Quality promulgated by the FDA, EPA, IBWA or any of the 50 States. This testing is performed for Berkshire Springs by National Testing Laboratories Ltd (NTL) of Ypsilanti MI. NTL is an internationally recognized independent testing facility whose labs are certified in multiple states including Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, and New York.
